What makes a bicycle? A basic frame, two wheels, handlebars, pedals, and oh yes, that big cushy seat! Yep, that’s how about 99% of us think when it comes to a bicycle…and that’s great! A bicycle isn't supposed to be complicated; it’s simple & it’s fun! And being in the cycling & fitness business for (50) years, we couldn’t agree more.
Why come to Bickel’s for a bicycle?
Not a One-Size-Fits-All World
People naturally come in all shapes & sizes. If you’re 5’ 5”… you’re 5’ 5”, not 6’ 3”. Your arms, legs, waist, etc. are naturally at different lengths & proportions. As with clothing & shoes, you dress with what fits you best! Bicycles are no different.
Unfortunately, many people tend to settle for a “one-size-fits-all” discount store standard because that’s simply all they know. People ask us all the time, “It’s a 26” adult bike, right?!” Sure…26” wheel size, but bicycles actually come in multiple FRAME sizes within that 26” wheel spec. When people sit on a properly fitted bicycle, they immediately recognize the HUGE difference in comfort, stability, & enjoyment of their ride. And as with a pair of shoes, if it's not comfortable, you won't use it.
Types of Bicycles
Not only does the sizing matter, but the TYPE of bicycle matters just as much. Bicycles are built & designed for the kind of riding you're looking to do. What brings you in for a bicycle can be for a completely different reason than the guy next to you.
Selection is the name of the game & we’ve got that. Averaging over 400 bicycles on the floor at any given time, Bickel's is the largest bicycle shop in Southeast Iowa & West Central Illinois. Single-speed cruisers to ride around the block, children’s beginner trikes & run bikes, comfort bikes for park rides that sit you up with suspension in the seatpost & fork, multi-speed road bikes for long trips & competitive racing, commuting bikes for home & work, rugged mountain bikes for great outdoor trail riding, etc. Come by for a visit to see, touch, & test ride all the options you have available!
Quality & Service
Benjamin Franklin was quoted as saying, “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” Trust us, there are a lot of unsatisfied folks out there! Especially moms & dads wanting to get inexpensive bicycles for their kids (because as we all know, they grow so quickly!) yet find that what they end up getting doesn't hold up long enough, if much at all.
The problem is that discount stores approach bicycles as toys vs. how we & our manufactures approach them - a means of transportation. From the welding of the frames down to the materials used, including the tiny, hidden components that allow your two wheels to spin, there are big differences in the quality found in the design & parts. To them, it's just units to move. To us, it's a bicycle to be enjoyed for many years and handed down or even traded-in for the next size up.
At Bickel’s, our name that goes out with every bicycle we sell. Even if just pedaling around during playtime, safety is very important to us. When we say, "brakes that stop, gears that shift" we mean it! Bicycles are what we specialize in, and our expert mechanics average over 25 years of experience each. We know how to properly build bikes and maintain them, seeing to it that they last & meet, if not exceed your expectations. Add in awesome product warranties, you’ll be very satisfied in doing business with us.
Keeping It within Budget
Just like bicycle sizes, budgets come in all sizes as well & we can meet yours. At Bickel's, you will find that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a great, reliable bicycle.
